Hello! Soooo this is me.
I started teaching yoga in 2012 when I became a full-time stay-at-home mom, after leaving a ten year nursing career. My background knowledge of the body (and people) help me greatly in my teaching practice. Yoga first became a part of my life in 2003 after a work-related back injury led me to the practice in search of relief and restoration. I found it, and I'd love to bring the same to others.
I've been a Yoga Alliance certified teacher since 2012. My teachers stem from the branches of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga (Kevin Elander of Yoga Mandala, Calgary and Hart Lazer of United Yoga, Montreal). Leaning me heavily towards teaching alignment based, body safe, flow yoga.
Vinyasa yoga is a flow based practice. Movement occurs in time with the breath. Poses (asana) are usually sequence based, and build up through the practice until the peak is reached, and cool down begins. Then svanasana (corpse pose - but don't worry, nobody dies!) Classes usually last one hour unless otherwise specified.

"Karen Barnes offers a path to practicing yoga that I have not had with any other teacher. I live with scoliosis and chronic pain and Karen has still found a way to make yoga accessible, relevant, and a lot of fun! Her attention to alignment, awareness of each student’s unique experience, and ability to make you both challenge yourself and smile at the same time make every session your favorite. " -Chantel (Seattle, WA)
"Karen's yoga classes are filled with the best music that inspire seamless transitions throughout the practice. She is a bubbly instructor who infuses laughter and self-love into the practice while also providing a challenging series that pushes me to grow stronger in my body and mind." -Catherine (Calgary, AB, Canada)
"I hadn't tried yoga in a class setting before and I'm not very flexible, so I was hesitant. But Karen's ability to tailor practice, from individual poses to entire yoga sessions, to the individual's needs makes it easy for people with very different levels of experience, strength, and flexibility to get the most from any class. Karen is very friendly, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I highly recommend her! " -Leif (Seattle, WA)
